RÉDUIT, MAURITIUS — A delegation from Bahir Dar University (BDU), Ethiopia, concluded a specialized week-long site visit and capacity-building program at the University of Mauritius (UoM) from April 20 to 25, 2026. The visit focused on the progress and technical implementation of the EDU-ABCM project, an initiative funded by the EU Erasmus+ program.
Led by Professor Nigus Gabbiye Habtu, the BDU team engaged in intensive sessions hosted by the UoM Faculty of Engineering. As the project coordinator, the University of Mauritius facilitated technical training on two newly developed remote laboratories. These facilities allow for remote simulations and digital learning, a core component of the project's mission to modernize higher education.
Highlights of the Visit
The comprehensive schedule balanced technical training with field observations:
- Remote Laboratory Training: The delegation spent significant
time at Lab 1 (biogas remote lab) and Lab 2 (solar remote lab) facilities,
performing simulations and receiving capacity-building training on
mounting remote lab modules onto the "Learnify" platform.
- Field Inspections: On April 23, the delegates
visited a wind farm and a photovoltaic farm to observe renewable energy
infrastructure. As seen in the attached photograph, the team also
inspected on-site project activities involving sustainable water
management systems and climate-resilient agricultural setups.
- Knowledge Exchange: BDU representatives discussed
their progress on challenge-driven, student-centered education models and
outlined plans for remote labs to be developed at Bahir Dar University.
- Future Collaboration: The visit concluded with
sessions dedicated to the sustainability of the EDU-ABCM project and
discussions on long-term institutional collaboration between the two
universities.
The visit was coordinated by Dr. Pratima Khadoo, project lead at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at UoM. By bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical remote-access technology, this partnership continues to strengthen energy education across the African continent.
