1. What is your name and what subject are you studying. Which year and semester?
My name is Temechew Dessie, and I am currently pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Bahir Dar University. I am in my second year, second semester.
2. How do you evaluate the traditional teacher-centered teaching method?
The teacher-centered teaching method has both strengths and limitations. In the traditional teacher-centered teaching method, the teacher is the primary source of knowledge and students are passive recipients. While the teacher-centered approach can be effective in certain contexts (e.g., lectures, technical training, or large classes), it often needs to be complemented by student-centered strategies to foster deeper understanding, engagement, and skill development. Blended or learner-centered approaches, such as problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, and collaborative projects that actively involve students in their own learning is crucial.
3. How helpful is the parabolic dish micro gas turbine systems (CSP-MGT) module to your renewable energy technology course?
The CSP-MGT module (https://time.learnify.se/l/s-full.html#att/VDRM) is highly beneficial to a renewable energy technology course. The module provides an overview of solar thermal power technologies, highlighting the role of parabolic dish micro gas turbine systems and explaining the thermodynamic cycles used in CSP-powered micro gas turbines and their integration. It deepens understanding of concentrated solar power applications, introduces advanced thermodynamic cycles, and bridges theoretical concepts with practical system integration. By exploring where CSP-MGT fits within the broader spectrum of solar thermal technologies, the module enhances learners’ ability to assess and compare renewable energy systems for efficiency, scalability, and sustainability. The methodology ensure an efficient pedagogical approach of student-centered, flipped-classroom, case study based and challenge-driven, digital and online education.
4. How do you evaluate the CSP-MGT module as a standalone teaching course module?
The CSP-MGT module serves as a solid standalone teaching course. It is well-structured with appropriate prerequisites, and the references and reading resources provided are both relevant and informative. The inclusion of exercises and open-ended essay questions effectively encourages critical thinking and deeper exploration of the subject matter.
This module successfully lays down the fundamental principles of gas turbine power plants as well as advanced solar thermal power systems and how they can be integrated for decentralized power generation and micro combined heat and power. As such, it provides a strong foundation for students interested in both conventional and renewable energy systems. Overall, it is a comprehensive and well-designed course module that balances theoretical knowledge with practical insight.
5. Do you recommend the course module to your colleagues and classmates?
Absolutely! I would highly recommend this course module to my colleagues and classmates. The content is well-structured and insightful, making it a valuable addition to any energy-related study program. I also look forward to using the Explore Energy Digital Academy (EEDA) as a supplementary resource throughout my academic journey and even after graduation. It offers a rich platform to deepen understanding and stay updated on advancements in the energy sector.
