It is now clear that higher education requires substantial modernization in nearly every country worldwide. While many nations offer high-quality educational programs, they often face certain challenges, including: (1) limited opportunities for high-level online international collaboration among students, (2) insufficient emphasis on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, (3) weak connections with the business sector, and (4) a predominantly teacher-centered approach.

The project Capacity Building on Student-Centered Energy Education in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mauritius and Mozambique is co funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union. It started in June 2023 and spans over three years. The overall objectives of the project are related to modernizing the higher education within the contemporary energy sector in the partner institutions, realizing that energy services of different kinds are one of the major impacts on the climate change globally.

In this project, eight universities in four countries in Africa (Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mozambique) benefit and collaborate with two universities in EU (Italy, Sweden) towards modernization of courses and programs in the energy sector, with emphasis on the general perspectives of circular economy towards energy sustainability.

The project is led by the University of Mauritius, with University of Douala acting as deputy.  The partner universities are:

  • ·        University of Mauritius (Mauritius)
  • ·        Open University Mauritius (Mauritius)
  • ·        University of Buea (Cameroon)
  • ·        University of Douala (Cameroon)
  • ·        Debre Berhan University (Ethiopia)
  • ·        Bahir Dar University (Ethiopia)
  • ·        University Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique)
  • ·        University of Save (Mozambique)
  • ·        University of Genoa (Italy)
  • ·        KTH Royal Institute of Technology  (Sweden)

The project has been distributed among ten work packages (WP). Each WP has one WP-Leader (WPL) and one Deputy WP Leader (DWPL) for proper management and successful realisation of the project deliverables. The project also has a Management Board which meets every two weeks throughout the project for a follow-up of the project activities and other important issues.

The members of the project currently developing modules in the Explore Energy Digital Academy platform. The modules go through a Quality Improvement Process before they are published. All the partner universities will also benefit from state of the art laboratories in their respective fields of expertise. The laboratories will be developed as virtual laboratories and will be accessible online. Upon launching of the virtual laboratories and the online modules, the universities will pride themselves of high quality education in the field of Energy.
